The Later Life Lending Summit, held on 19 November 2024 in Sheffield, brought together professionals from the mortgage and later life lending sectors to discuss the evolving landscape of later life borrowing.

The event featured addresses by David Burrowes (Chair of the Equity Release Council and Robert Sinclair (Chief Executive of the Association of Mortgage Intermediaries). Mr Sinclair shared his thoughts on the market and how professionals can work together to achieve better consumer outcomes.

Following the welcome speeches, the almost 250 attendees participated in interactive sessions such as “Lender Lightning Talks” where providers shared market developments.

An “Advice in Action” session used case studies to explore customer needs and product choices. This engaging 90-minute segment featured concise, impactful presentations from six prominent later life lenders, followed by interactive and stimulating roundtable discussions.

It aimed to equip advisers with the knowledge to overcome obstacles in later life lending and enhance client outcomes. Speakers included Aviva’s John MacDonald, who discussed how knowing your client and focusing on ways to navigate the property puzzle can achieve better outcomes for customers.

Importance of empathy when working with older homeowners

In a separate talk, Martyn Stones of Countrywide Surveying Services highlighted the vital role of surveyors in achieving positive outcomes for later life lending customers.

Martyn noted the importance of empathy when working with older homeowners, who may face vulnerabilities related to age, health or emotional ties to their homes. He explained that, through tailored training and collaboration with brokers and lenders, Countrywide aims to foster a transparent and holistic approach to valuations, ensuring customer needs are met with sensitivity and expertise.

The summit provided over five hours of structured learning accredited by the London Institute of Banking & Finance (LIBF).

Delivered in collaboration with the Association of Mortgage Intermediaries, the event is part of the Equity Release Council’s commitment to innovation, collaboration and excellence in later life lending advice, while driving positive change in the industry.
